About

Ticker tape was a means of transmitting stock price information over telegraph lines between around 1870 and 1970. It consisted of a paper strip which ran through a machine called a stock ticker which printed abbreviated company symbols followed by price and volume information. The concept of the stock ticker lives on in the scrolling electronic tickers on brokerage walls and financial television networks. The term 'ticker tape' came from the sound made by the machine as it printed and tape simply refers to the machines using a paper tape printout as a rolling display of stock prices. In 1867 Edward Calahan of the American Telegraph Company invented the first stock telegraph printing device. Early versions of stock tickers provided the first mechanical means of conveying stock prices over a long distance using telegraph wiring. The ticker used the same symbols as Morse code as a medium for conveying messages. Previously, they were hand delivered via written or verbal messages. The increase in speed provided by the ticker allowed for faster and more exact sales. Since the ticker ran continuously updates to a stock’s price occurred whenever the price changed. Stock Tickers became more effective much faster and stock trading became a more time sensitive matter. For the first time, trades were being done in what we think of as near real time By the 1880's there were about a thousand stock tickers installed in the offices of New York bankers and brokers. In 1890 members of the exchange agreed to create the New York Quotation Co. in order to buy up all other ticker companies. Stock ticker machines are an ancestor of the modern computer printer. Stock tickers were one of the first applications to transmit text over a wire to a printing device. Stock tickers in various buildings were connected using technology based on telegraph machines with the advantage that the output was readable text instead of the dots and dashes of Morse code. The machines printed a series of ticker symbols followed by brief information about the price of that company's stock; the thin strip of paper they were printed on was called ticker tape. The word ticker comes from the distinct ticking noise the machines made while printing. Newer and more efficient tickers became available in the 1930s and 1960s but the physical ticker tape phase was quickly coming to a close being followed by the electronic phase. These newer and better tickers still had an approximate 15 to 20 minute delay. Stock ticker machines became obsolete in the 1960s replaced by computer networks. In 1996 a ticker type electronic device was produced that could operate in true real time. One of the most famous displays is the simulated ticker located at One Times Square in New York City. The ticker symbol is a unique set of characters used to identify the company. The shares traded is the volume for the trade being quoted. Price traded refers to the price per share of a particular trade. Change direction shows whether the stock is trading higher or lower than the previous trade giving the terms downtick and uptick. Change amount refers to the difference in price from the previous day’s trading close. Many tickers today include color to indicate whether a stock is trading higher than the previous day’s - green, lower than previous day - red, or has remained unchanged - blue or white.

Resolved Question: How do I stand in terms of transferring to Stanford, NYU, Columbia, Cornell, UC Berkeley, UCLA?

Hello every! I am going into my second year at a California community college (Mira Costa). Time to start getting ready to apply to transfer to a 4 year university. I was just wondering what my chances are at making it into the schools in my title. Background: High school gpa: 3.5 CC gpa: 3.2 (still have 35 more credits to take, starting to improve my grades, working a lot harder, if I can receive straight A's from here on out, I'll finish with a 3.6-3.7) I work for a private investment firm, for a man who is one of the top contributors to the UC schools, attended Columbia himself. I work very closely with his accountant and executive assistant, which will hopefully be excellent people to write letters of rec (I have some others in mind as well). By the time I apply for transfer I will have been working here for one year, by the time I transfer out it will be around 1.5 years. I also intend to join my CC's finance/investment club very soon. My goal is to study international relations, and becoming a stockbroker, and ultimately a higher position as a portfolio/hedgefund manager (possibly internationally). I would like to acquire an internship during my undergraduate studies, work/intern once I graduate, and go to grad school for my M.B.A. In my spare time I like bodybuilding, surfing, buying/selling for profit, and am in a big virtual stock game (I placed 420 out of 12,000 people, not sure how important that is but thought I'd mention it :) ) I have been bodybuilding for several years, and plan on competing next year. I will be tying this into my essay, since it has played a significant role in my life. It has truly shaped who I am, giving me the confidence and determination I have. I have a clear goal in mind and I know I can achieve it, if I can just receive that on paper and show these universities that! :) Thank you for taking the time to read every of that :) Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Not sure how much this matters, but I am also Iranian, and have helped the youth in my community with holding past athletic events. I've also applied for the IGETC, and have guaranteed admission to every UC's except for Berkeley and UCLA, as long as I keep over a 3.0. I've heard for Berkeley and UCLA preferably you should have over a 3.5. Like I said, I'm working incredibly difficult on my grades and can almost guarantee I will have straight A's from here on out.

In 1947 Pakistan has one steel mill and one dilapidated textile mill and one non-functional university. Today Pakistan produces everything on the planet and exports planes–something that Bharat cannot do. It has 150 universities, some of the world class like Agha Khan University and GIST. Those afflicted by Pakistanphobia cannot look this, and will never be able to look this. Anti-Pakistanis will keep harping on the same old tunes taught to in Bharati KG classes. Pakistan has more than 80 TV channels, most of them discussing news and issues. Pakistanis also receive international and Bharati channels. They are very well aware of their neighborhood and about the West. Bharatis do not receive Pakistani channels and keep on repeating what was taught to them in the temple Pakistan is a Nuclear power which can and will destroy Bharat if it tries to step one inch into Pakistani territory. Neither American sanctions, nor threats have changed the national consensus on resisting foreign occupation and Bharati infiltration into Afghanistan. The information given about Pakistan is full of errors, and based on the Bharati media which only reports negative news about Pakistan Let us look at 60 years not just this year. This semester Pakistani Stock market was one of the best performing in the world. Pakistani stock provide a huge opportunity. The US has not refused Civilian Nuclear deal. It cannot. It needs Pakistan. It will arrive, but may take a little time. Even the Bharati 123 has not been operationalized. Pakistan has been recognized as a Nuclear Power at the Summit. This is a first step…other things will follow. The powerful Bharati lobby could not create sanctions on Pakistan or cease the KL bill or F-16s–its potency is a thing of the past. And I'm not satisfied with the allocation of tiny cap funds in the freedom 2040. So I do somewhat agree with "MKC", about which funds too pick. I'm just not sure if I want 75% in the target fund. Also, I was below the impression that Spartan 500 index was a great fund to have because of the low fees opposed to the other mutual funds and because they generally outperform mutual funds. I'm definitely getting rid of at least 10% of Pimco or every of it. And I plan on slicing some Spartan in half. Nevertheless, I'm still interested in your suggestions; this is not my area of expertise. @ Common Sense, yes I know I have too much in the Spartan. Actually, and extra 15% was recently redirected there, due to my employer no longer participating in a growth fund I used to have.

You look, my parents are planning to send me back to Philippines because they believe that universities there are much better than the ones here in Qatar. It's certainly not done or revised (so don't worry about grammar), but what do you think of the overall story and how it's presented? For eleven months, I was a loser, and they were the most promising months of my life. Eighteen players are selected to Ballistic Soccer Club each year. Out of nineteen players, I was the only one who evaded the coach’s interest- for the second straight year. The first time I missed the team, I blamed everyone excluding myself; the second year, I self-analyzed my demeanor, will-power, and physical and mental strength. My results? Wimpy, undetermined, fat, and whiny, I labeled myself a “Loser.” Surely, there was no wish left for me. Wrong! Change was necessary. Everything was a challenge. The soccer team had to be mine. Homework had to be perfect. Unfortunately, many people tend to neglect the importance of a consistent, arduous, daily routine. Everyday, I woke up at five o’ clock, ran three miles, went to school, studied, completed homework, and finished lifting weights at eleven o’ clock. This routine held true for eleven months, including holidays (I even asked Santa Claus not to fill my stocking with chocolate). After earning straight A-pluses (anything less would amount to being “Loser”), I still had to overcome the final wall- soccer tryouts. I still remember that day. My name was the first one announced. My coach realized my work ethic and granted me a starting position and captaincy. Nonetheless, I never became complacent. I continued my “success routine” and was recruited by a coach of a youth international team that played in Europe. After arriving home, I continued my captaincy up to today; albeit, I always fear complacency. To remind me of my “Loser days,” I stitched “LOSER” on my cleats. I continue to wear those shoes.
